Moodle 4.0 for learners

It is essential for learners to be able to concentrate fully on learning. With the new 4.0 update, priorities are set for better learning progress, which in turn leads to learners being able to work on tasks in a more concentrated manner.

Since the update to Moodle 4.0, the entire structure of a course is visible at a glance. This allows easier navigation to any content. Upcoming tasks are now clearly highlighted. Learners can quickly and easily find their way within a course. All of this promotes structured knowledge acquisition and engagement with content.

The amount of visible content has been reduced with the new Moodle Update 4.0. Additionally, the focus will be on providing smaller information packages. According to the developers, a more concentrated way of working is achieved by the distraction mainly due to the reduced block area.

Since Moodle Update 4.0, learners can view deadlines for all courses in the so-called dashboard. Together with the calendar, this makes the learning process easier to organize, plan and manage.

Moodle 4.0 for educators

Moodle already provides many options for creating and editing courses. In the 4.0 update, several new features have been implemented that make this area even more attractive for teachers and trainers. For example, it is now possible for course instructors to get an intimate overview of the entire course structure of a course. The use of integrated video conferences has also been improved. The open source solution “BigBlueButton” allows conferences to be started with excellent audio and video quality. Slides can also be easily shared with it as well as breakout rooms can be created if required. Of course, BigBlueButton also includes a classic chat function, a note-taking option and other tools such as the whiteboard to interact with each other in real time. In conclusion, BigBlueButton also provides useful analytics about each session and user engagement.

Learners are notified of course changes directly via email and the mobile app.

The new Moodle 4.0 update offers some improved features for the screen reader and for keyboard navigation in the text editor to promote “accessibility”.

Other exciting features

With the new version, there is a simplified onboarding process for new users. Moodle offers new options for adding notes and highlights. These explain the key features and functions of each page. This ultimately reduces the number of support requests.

A strength of Moodle is its seamless interoperability with other external learning tools via the LTI 1.3 Advantage protocol. This allows information to be exchanged directly and securely between systems. Moodle 4.0 can act as both an LTI 1.3 Advantage host (LTI tool provider) and consumer (LTI platform).

The dashboard can be completely customized with just a few clicks. Also, all configuration settings from one site can be easily imported into another site.
